I've discovered or maybe re-discovered two things that seem to be major components of my core. 1. I really like solving problems, and 2. as far as I can tell, I feel the most happy when I am able to help someone who needs something.

Taxes

I managed to locate all my tax papers and get them done at the absolute last minute today. That made me feel less crappy about the whole situation. I really missed the boat this year and I really miss my old tax man. I have far too much on my mind to be able to cope with doing my own taxes. #havemercy

My dad has a theory that big catastrophic failures are really the result of lots of little mistakes--a multiple mistake chain. Three Mile Island, the Titanic--as kids we grew up hearing lots of dinner table stories about how smart people didn't pay attention to little indicators that led to future disasters.

It's true, problems have symptoms just like disease and infirmities.

Core Values

These are legit.  Run a solid company:
  • Never compromise in hiring.
  • Never accept an asymptote – there's always a better way; we can always do better.
  • Always aspire to create THE BEST customer experience imaginable.
  • Focus.
  • Say what's there – do you have an idea or a concern? Speak up.
  • Be wary of hubris – we know we are both fallible & destructible.
  • Actively solicit advice.
  • Relentlessly cut waste and inefficiencies.
  • Always confront the brutal facts head on.
  • Experiment, be comfortable with risk, but always measure and adjust course based on the results.
  • Remember that fast and effective is sometimes preferable to perfection.
  • Be intolerant of bureaucracy.
  • Welcome change – see it for the growth opportunity it brings.
  • Break trail.
  • Stand on the shoulders of giants.
  • Celebrate mistakes.

    Slick new computer

Our modern lives are becoming increasingly like the operating systems we use on computers every day. Underneath the layer of graphically pleasing interfaces...

The things we enjoy, the luxuries we have, the routines we execute daily, are all managed by increasingly complex systems.

    Business of being born

Started watching this on Netflix, got more than I bargained for a few minutes into it, but before I stopped watching it, the question of wether or not doctors manipulate mothers into procedures had been posed.

The argument for midwifery is clear, the history of healthcare in the USA is undeniable, and the incentive for doctors is simple.

Anyone who has had a baby is having one or will at some point should watch this. I was interested initially in the medical/insurance/business implications, but it is really geared for women which is probably obvious, so another way to explain why I stopped watching it was because it got a little graphic... gross, not what I wanted to be seeing just before I go to sleep.

On another topic, I'm looking forward to some new cycling gear in a few days. The weather is perfect for daily rides.

    Issues

Happy to say to that over the years, I have noticed a lot of quirks about myself, and have gotten beyond almost all of them.  Don't know how exactly I picked them up, but I think I have eliminated most of them.  Any ex-girlfriends would be interested to know this.

So funny how life shapes you. I think some of us are more susceptible to environmental influence.  I know I was growing up.  Not to get on a soapbox or have a pity party or anything, but I can see now how growing up in my circumstances embedded several issues in my perception of the world.  Being a minority, not having a traditional family, being the only male in my household to name a few.  Somehow, somewhere along the way I developed a certain unique type of self confidence, at least I think that is appropriate to say.  It was self destructive.  Someone must have told me I could do anything if I set my mind to it, one too many times.  I still believe that, but now with a higher dosage of reality and a lot more experience under my belt.  Lots of regrets about my youth, things I wished were different.  So grateful for great friends now.  In contrast, I didn't have any good friends growing up, pretty isolated in my community.  The kids my age from down the street weren't allowed to hang out with me.  I guess that is one reason I am sooooo thankful for my friends now, that will never change.

Relationships:  I can only guess with a fair amount of certainty that my relationships with girls and the pitfalls and weaknesses I've had over the years with different girls have everything to do with my experience as a kid.  Having divorced parents, and friends turn their backs on me for pathetic reasons  must have instilled in me a general distrust for other people.  Luckily not so much that I couldn't develop relationships at all, but that I would rarely if ever let them get to a very serious point without having serious doubts.  I guess I could say I have been in survival mode for a while as far as relationships go.  Still there I think, but much differently.  It would seem that now, I'm in survival mode, but am ok to bring someone along for the ride.  Too many memories that I would like to openly enjoy, but because they are with ex's, I keep them buried away in the photo albums of my life. Interesting.

Priorities have changed a bit.  Money doesn't buy happiness.  Happiness is all about the people in your life, being humble, staying strong, and reaching goals.  Keep it simple and love other people.  Ski like there is no tomorrow, eat like its your last meal, ponder like its your last hour.

    Goodnight

    Occupy Wall Street

    1. They have incorrectly labeled the 1%. It's actually not the top 1% that are the problem. More like the top .01%. These are the people who sneak, and form secret deals with law makers to get what they want. The one percent they have targeted is made up of many many hard working, industrious, committed entrepreneurs, college educated, driven people. Many of which have spent long hours and made many sacrifices to get where they are. So by labeling all of those people as the problem, they have alienated a lot of potential supporters.

    2. They are in the wrong place, or at least, they are not in all the right places. Michael Moore said they shouldn't be in Washington. That is a mistake. Do they really think they are going to convince people on wall street to stop liking money? To stop acquiring more, to stop doing their jobs? Politicians are a major part of the problem, A MAJOR PART. Protestors aren't going to persuade politicians to cease making shady deals by putting pressure on the other parties. How about putting pressure on the parties involved in the financing approvals of Solyndra or Open Range? Time and money being thrown around as if hard working Americans didn't work half their lives away earning those dollars. Of course those are the two "current" examples of a government that has been running rampant, ignoring or bypassing appropriate checks and balances for decades.

Only time will tell what happens with this, but if time has taught us anything about corruption, there are only two ways to eliminate it: money and violence. And since the 99% don't have enough money, and because money is the issue at hand, well, in coming months or years, violence will very likely end up being the means for actual change.
